Battery Park Ballfields
The “Ballfields” at Battery Park City are considered
the first sustainable recreational fields in the US.
The Battery City Park Authority, a public corporation charged
with development in southwestern Manhattan, and the Battery Park
City Parks Conservancy implemented strict environmental specifications
to conserve resources. Designed by architect and planner HOK,
the Ballfields use recycled materials, bio-swales for drainage,
pesticide-free maintenance, photovoltaics for on-site electrical
needs, and a composting toilet system, the Clivus M54 Trailhead.
Although designed for remote sites, the Trailhead can be used
almost anywhere.
