Mountain Equipment Cooperative (MEC)

Completed in May of 2002, MEC’s Winnipeg store is generally considered to be one of the greenest buildings in Canada. It is only the second retail store in Canada to achieve the C2000 rating for buildings that achieve a 50% reduction in energy consumption.

In addition to drastically reducing energy consumption, the building incorporates water-conserving features like the Clivus composting toilet system and uses mainly reclaimed materials for its structural components. The use of these green building technologies reflects MEC’s ongoing commitment to environmental leadership.
