Black Rock Center
The Black Rock Forest Center for Science and Education is located
in the Hudson River Valley. Its mission is to protect and study
the 3,785-acre Black Rock Forest Preserve.
To integrate itself with Black Rock Forest, the Center resides
on previously disturbed land, maximizes the benefits of solar
exposure and cooling winds, and is landscaped with native plants.
Besides using on-site well water and automated faucets in its
lavatories, the Center saves even more water with Clivus Multrum’s
waterless composting toilet systems.
The Science Center was completed in 1999. In 2004, the Black Rock Forest Lodge was completed to allow for extended stays by students and scientists. The Lodge sleeps as many as 48 people and has a large common room for meals and meetings. The Clivus systems in the Lodge include 10 toilet fixtures and four large capacity composters.
